Why Study political Behavior?
In this course of American Government, I find the study of Political Behavior to be a critical part. The study of government and politics has a huge focus on the structure of government which includes the three branches, the elected officials, and the courts. All this information is quite significant and since this unit ties all that information about functions and representation illustrates the link between the physical government and the average citizen. The majority of citizens participate in politics on a more basic level in which they vote and pay taxes. They may not have an inkling to thrust themselves into office, or even rally, but they do indeed vote.
Voting smarter and understanding the choices individuals make is extremely important. The number one influence on an individuals politics is family. Parents pass their politics onto their children and these children carry those same views well into adulthood without thinking twice about the perspective they are holding. At this age it is important for students to step back from what they are told, and what they think are their personal views, and really experiment with ideology and find their zone on the political spectrum. I believe students need to separate themselves from not only the views of their family, but the views of their friends, their demographic, their income level, their neighborhood, their teachers- and decide on their own what they support and what they oppose. It is only then that we can bring solutions to the problems of the world because it is only then that we can put assumptions and generalities aside.
Students need to remove the nonsense from politics and focus on the issues at hand. Students must seek truth through objectivity. Students must familiarize themselves with propaganda techniques and tactics in used in all aspects of campaigning. Students must be exposed to a variety of perspectives and learn to respect alternate views on similar issues. Understanding political behavior and voting trends will create meaning of everything we have learned during the course of the semester. Students will understand how participation in the political process is so powerful and how they can make their vote count. Honestly, this unit is critical for all the citizens to understand and examine.
