Political Behavior ‖ The Political Spectrum
Goals & Objectives: *Students will map out how the nation’s first parties Federalist and Antifederalist parties evolved into Democrats and Republicans. *Students will draw the political spectrum. *Students will comprehend the meaning of the terms “conservative” and “liberal” in United States Politics. California State Content Standards 12.6.1: Analyze the origin, development, and role of political parties, noting those occasional periods in which there was only one major party or were more than two major parties. Common Core Literacy Standards CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.11-12.7 Integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and media (e.g., visually, quantitatively, as well as in words) in order to address a question or solve a problem. Driving Historical Question Considering the political spectrum as a whole, why are the United States’ Democratic Party and the United States’ Republican Party in constant battle with one another, when in reality, they are both moderates with political perspectives very similar to one another? Lesson Introduction (Anticipatory Set/Hook/Accessing Prior Knowledge) ‖ Time: 5 min 2-5 Minutes: Students will view a political cartoon and analyze what it means. This should be a fun way to introduce the topic of the lesson and to access students’ prior knowledge about the topic of political parties. Vocabulary (Content Language Development) ‖ Time: 2 min 2 Minutes: Liberal, Conservative, Radical, Reactionary, Two-party system, Political Spectrum, Political Efficacy, Socialism, Fascism, Third Parties Content Delivery (Method of Instruction) ‖ Time: 25 min Students will view the presentation on Political Parties. Students will take notes on the provided hand-out for guided notes. Student Engagement (Critical Thinking & Student Activities) ‖ Time: 8 min included in the presentation. Throughout the presentation students are asked a variety of questions to keep their learning active and to promote advanced critical thinking and historical analysis. Lesson Closure ‖ Time: 5 min Students will watch the video on the last slide and then respond in a quick-write. The teacher will have students “think-pair-share” their analysis with their neighbors. Once students have shared in pairs, the teacher will facilitate a class discussion of their findings. Assessments (Formative & Summative) Formative: Students will engage in critical thinking throughout the lesson as they pause and reflect on questions designated in the presentation. These reflections will also inform the teacher of levels of comprehension serving as informal formative assessments. Summative: Following the video on the last slide of the presentation, students will complete an exit slip in which they will apply the lesson content and concepts to answer the focus question at the end of the presentation. Accommodations for English Learners, Striving Readers and Students with Special Needs The content is represented in a variety of forms to meet the needs of English Learners, Striving Readers and Students with Special needs: The Political Spectrum, Conservative/Liberal chart and the Party Dominance Graph provide graphic representations of the content of the lesson making content accessible for ELs, SRs and SSNs. Pictures are included on most slides to provide visual context clues for ELs, SSNs and SRs. The Video at the conclusion of the lesson introduces a new concept in a format which is SSN, EL and SR friendly.
